Welcome Skateboards' Jakob Beaver, Blondey's Thames MMXX & Jante: 3 Skate Parts You Don't Want To Miss

Jun 2025 by Route One
Opportunity, Opportunity, Opportunity.

A lot of skate videos are hugely thought out, well choreographed pieces of art. From trick lists to specific spot destinations, many of us curate our footage to within the proverbial inch. The flip side of the coin is the apathetic opportunist; the skater who takes it as it comes and doesn't plan anything beyond buying a pack of big skins at the nearest corner shop/gas station (depending on which side of the Atlantic they may find themselves at any given moment).

Having just watched Welcome Skateboards 'Home Games,' we're pretty sure Jakob Beaver falls into the latter category, based primarily on the understanding that little he rides his skateboard towards could ever really be considered a "spot." It really does make for some damn entertaining footage and, when backed up by the ever enjoyable Ryan Townley, there's a very good reason we chose to open this week's content with Welcome's latest offering!

A quick Google tells us that Dongtan is an township in Hwasseong, South Korea. It apparently has four skyscrapers! We'll bear that in mind should we ever find ourselves on a spur-of-the-moment trip to East Asia. Blondey has taken to claiming that 'Lords of Dongtan' exists as a means to "chronicling Thames MMXX's visit to South Korea but, we have to admit, Ludwig's footage looks distinctly Elephant and Castle; perhaps the brand's budget has been spent on acquiring a new team member and they couldn't afford to take him along for the ride...

which brings us on to the elephant (without the castle) in the room; post Palace Blondey seems to have blossomed into an acutely self aware and often fantastically hilarious content creator, so we look forward to any new uploads, especially when the titling is a rather clever play on a 2005 movie, but he also seems to be making some serious moves as a brand owner and the introduction of Gabbers as Thames' first ever pro had us genuinely cheering.

It's a move nobody saw coming but one we're backing 100% - anything that sees one of our all-time favourite pros afforded to opportunity to get paid is alright by us and Blondey really seems to have found his groove. This really could be a match made in heaven!

Talking of matches made in heaven, regular readers to our twice monthly musings will be well aware of our love affair with all things Jante. Fritte Soderstrom's numerically titled, Sour centric series of videos excites us like little else and, in the absence of Sour Solution IV, it serves as our opportunity to get our Gustav fix. As well as reminding us that skateboarding is still the coolest thing in the world.

But there's a lot more to Jante than just Gustav Tonnesen and Fritte proves that dropping three years of Filip Almqvist's most aesthetically pleasing skateboarding in one 12 minute package.

Think 'Rough Cut' but with the smoothest filming imaginable (not sure smooth cut would work as a title: Ed) it's raw footage that beautifully illustrates the symbiotic relationship between a good filmer and his muse. If you're an aspiring skate film maker and want to move beyond TikTok's of your mates slamming down the local Aldi kerbs, you could do a lot worse than study this as though it is your bible. For the rest of us though? We'll just take the opportunity to watch some bloody good skateboarding!
