Vans Skateboarding Presents: Cher Strauberry
Skateboarding has always acted as a beacon for self-expression in a mundane world of generic conformity. The punks, the artisans and the social outcasts have all found solace in our creative world and though recent years may have born witness to a movement towards mainstream acceptance that reality still rings true to this day.
At first glance your Nyjah's and Aureliens may appear stereotypical jock sports stars but a homeschooled vegan Rasta kid and a lad from the roughest estate in Lyon are certainly no silver spoon varsity types. That said, nor are they pushing the boundaries of social convention in the same way as the focus of this brand new piece from Vans, the absolutely wonderful Cher Strauberry.
Showcasing not only Cher's undoubted ability on a board, the film illustrates just how attitudes and opportunities are changing for the better within skateboarding. As Elissa Steamer, one of the greatest skate trailblazers of all time, says "It's essential for people to see something different in case they identify with something different (and then) they know it's ok and there is space for them."
